Four years ago I joined the Junior League of Orange County (JLOC) because I wanted to make an impact in my own community, by creating and participating in projects that not only addressed the needs of my neighbors, but represented my passion and dedication to the empowerment of women and children.
This year marks the 95th year that Junior League of Orange County NY has served the needs of our community while developing the potential of women through innovative projects that provide free education, access to career and family support resources, and skill building workshops with the goal of inspiring each woman, to maximize her potential, and build a strong foundation for her future. Resume writing, interview skills, and dealing with alcoholism are but a few examples of workshops provide.
Past members of JLOC organized the first Foster Family Picnic and the “People for People Fund” which continue on to this day. JLOC’s partnership with Leadership Orange allows us to recognize up and coming young leaders for their contributions in business, Non-Profit, and volunteer work with the Orange County’s “Rising Star Award”. With continued community support, JLOC is able to donate “Back to School Supplies” to the Department of Social Services, support Braeside Camp, and present college scholarships to talented young women. These are but a few examples of the amazing projects JLOC has been involved with. This year we are setting a priority for our projects to empower young girls to meet their full potential, and are looking forward to our first “Girl’s Empowerment Expo” in the Fall.
Current and past member of JLOC have empathy to recognize needs in our community, the ability to think big, and the courage to bring their ideas to fruition. JLOC provides the opportunity for members to hone their leadership skills with free training, Webinars, and participation in the Association of Junior Leagues International organizational development courses. If you are women over the age of 21 and are looking to make a difference in the community while developing your leadership skills in a supportive environment, consider joining us at a general membership meeting.
The Junior League is one of the oldest, largest and most effective women’s volunteer organizations in the world. I believe community service is even more meaningful when you are working beside other women who share your passion and priorities. I am proud to being serving as president of an organization that has been challenging the status quo since 1921.
