Current JLOC Projects

2017-2018 season

Blessing Bags

Thanks to the generosity of the community and league members, who all shared their blessings, the JLOC recently donated 76 purses (Blessing Bags) filled with toiletries, makeup, accessories and surprises for the many women who use the services at HONORehg, an Emergency Housing organization, in Middletown, NY. [Pictured L-R: JLOC Members Kerri Fenton-Foley and Trish Chelsen delivering Blessing Bags to HONOEehg – Fall 2017.]

Backpacks for Kids

JLOC met with the Orange County Department of Social Services in Goshen and donated 48 backpacks filled with back-to-school supplies designated specifically for those children in the county’s at-risk, foster care program. Pre-packed backpacks filled with notebooks, folders, tissues, rulers, pens and pencils, etc. for children of families that may not otherwise have the means to purchase school supplies! Thanks to chairwoman Susan Roth for coordinating this great project! [Pictured L-R: JLOC Members Chloe Reddick Jackson, Susan Roth and Barbara DeStafeno stuff backpacks to deliver to Orange County Department of Social Services – Summer 2017.]

Girl Empowerment Expo

One day workshop organized by the JLOC to assist middle-school aged girls gain confidence and leadership skills. Topics covered include mental wellness, conflict resolution, positive body image and other topics of importance for pre-teen and teenage girls. It is hoped that with the skills that these girls learn, that they can be better prepared to affect positive change in their schools by taking up leadership roles and supporting other girls in their school and beyond. [Pictured: Gunnel Backman Greenfield teaches workshop participants yoga for stress relief – Fall 2017.]

JLOC Annual Scholarship Fund

The JLOC awards one scholarship to a graduating high school student in the amount of $1,000 at the end of every school year to be used for college. The criteria for the scholarship are: graduating female student, current resident of Orange County NY, entering college on a full-time basis, and involved as a volunteer in the community. [Pictured L-R: JLOC president Barbara DeStafeno, 2017 Scholarship recipient Elizabeth “Lydia” DeFusto, and Sherri Lattimer of the JLOC – Spring 2017.]

RAPP Holiday Party

Each December, the JLOC joins the Cornell Cooperative Extension in hosting their Annual Holiday Party for participants in their Relatives As Parents Program (RAPP). Our members plan festive activities, including a holiday craft, and a healthy snack. The children who participate are given the opportunity to create a holiday gift for the relative who is currently filling the parental role in their life. All of the participants get a chance to relax and enjoy some fun with their loved ones. [Pictured: JLOC members Chloe Reddick Jackson and Sherri Lattimer with a young RAPP participant – Winter 2017.]

RECAP Hat Mitten Sock Collection

The cold winter weather is no match for the warm-hearted women who make up the JLOC recently engaged in a community outreach program and collected 50 new hats, 65 pairs of new mittens and 100 pairs of new socks for many of the 184 kids in RECAP’s (Regional Economic Community Action Project) Head Start Program, providing additional warmth for 3-5 year olds [Pictured: Kerri Fenton-Foley of the JLOC delivers the league’s most recent donation – Winter 2017.]
